Passports with Purpose 2015We love to travel. We love to help other people to travel. But we know life is not all about travel. Sometimes life is a struggle, and when we travel we see that there are struggles everywhere.

Once a year, the travel blogging community comes together to raise money for a charitable cause, usually focusing on a specific geographic area and targeting a specific issue. We love to participate because we love to use our social platform for good whenever we can, and if we can help raise money for a worthy cause, we are happy to do it.

We are thrilled to participate in the Passports with Purpose blogger fundraising campaign for a fourth straight year. Passports with Purpose is an annual fundraising effort by travel bloggers to benefit a different charity each year. This year’s beneficiary is Worldreader, an organization that brings digital books and e-readers to kids to improve their lives and open up greater possibilties for them.

The founder of Worldreader, David Risher, shares the story of the organization on the Passports with Purpose website. In short, he saw a need, he envisioned a solution, and he is bringing it to fruition, one book, e-reader, or library at a time.

Books are a uniquely portable magic.

The funds raised in 2015 from Passports with Purpose will bring digital reading to five libraries in western Kenya. The e-readers will provide an estimated 6,250 children, teachers and parents with access to more than 50,000 booksEach library will get 50 Kindle e-readers, containing both English and Swahili fiction and non-fiction for all ages, as well as Kenyan textbooks. The Worldreader program also includes comprehensive training for the librarians, as well as a field-tested and proven solar solution that will keep the e-readers charged if electricity is scarce.

You’ll be glad to know that because this is a volunteer-run organization, 100% of the proceeds (except for the Paypal fees, which go to Paypal) will go directly to the charity.

And how does the fundraiser work? This is the fun part. Each blogger secures a travel-related prize for the campaign – a vacation package, a hotel stay, a travel gadget, a book, or a gift certificate –  and for every $10 donation you make, you can get a chance to win one of the prizes. You choose the prizes you want to be in the running for, and you make your donations accordingly.

Throughout the fundraiser, the folks at Passports with Purpose update us on which prizes have the most, and which prizes have the fewest donations (i.e., the best chances to win).

We have secured a terrific, family-friendly prize this year, which we will announce when the fundraiser goes live on Sunday, November 8th at 11:59pm. We will post our Passports with Purpose prize here at that time.

Until then, you might want to check our Instagram feed for a hint. 🙂

So get your digits ready to pounce on some chances at great travel prizes and create great new opportunities for travel and enrichment for your family.
